Of mattresses there are almost as many varieties as there are versions of the fairy tale of the princess and the pea.
We all have different weights, different sensitivities, and different ways of sleeping. Spring mattresses, foam mattresses, visco-elastic mattresses, latex mattresses… but for a van, the ideal is a breathable, insulating and light mattress. These 3 characteristics are fulfilled by the foam, for this reason it is the material most used for camper van camper van.
Typical densities of van cochons vary between 20 and 35Kg/m³, and are distinguished by the color of the foam. We use 30Kg mattresses with a thickness of 60mm, and 25Kg/m³ foam when the thickness is 80mm.
If the customer requests it, we can also make the mattress to measure (often we are asked for 70mm of foam and 30mm of viscoelastic).
These thicknesses and densities give an optimum ratio of comfort, interior clearance, and compactness when storing the mattress. If it is thicker than 8/10cm we will be losing interior height, and thinner than 60mm it will be somewhat hard (although I had 4cm and 20 foam in my previous Renault Trafic camper).
